Here is my structural analysis (in short): the input caused a strong emotional reaction, and she acknowledged it.
But, she didn't freeze up. She was quickly able to delve into herself and she found in her own personal history (tribal?) the reason why she responded that way.
But she didn't stop there. Anger, disgust and revulsion are, in psychological terms, "primitive" responses.
She moved from the emotional to the rational. In this sphere, she took into account rational thought and knowledge of history and society, and she was able to put the new information into a context.
OK, my analysis is convoluted and hypercomplicated, but, you can see in her process how she went from emotion to thoughts to clearly articulated ideas.
In your COMMENTS, very plainly, say if you think she expressed her ideas clearly and if she was able to communicate where she stands in terms of her personal moral universe.

Task 5: anti- Italian cartoons
When I first
watched the video of the Italian-American cartoons, I was undoubtedly shocked,
disgusted, and offended. Through all my years of studying history I had no idea
Italians were seen as such a “pest” to the American people. I was very offended
watching this because it made me realize that my grandparents may have faced
this horrible racism
when they first came to this
country, and I know they did not deserve it, since they were hardworking
immigrants. The cartoons depicting
Italians as lazy and rats made me feel particularly disgusted. From my family’s
own personal experiences here in America, I know they were not lazy. My great-
grandfather, Gaspare Mortillaro, was one of the two
elevator operators during the triangle shirtwaist fire who helped to save
hundreds of young girls from a burning building.
Hearing that people didn’t
recognize all the good that Italian immigrants did for our country shocks and
repulses me.
However, after thinking about it for a few
minutes, I realized that I really shouldn’t even be surprised. We have seen
immigrants up to this very day get scrutinized and hated for simply being from
another country. Today, Mexicans living in America, whether they are citizens
or not, fall victim to the harsh racism in this country. This made me realize
that although I am still disgusted and offended, I am not really as shocked,
because America has a history from the very beginning of discriminating against
anyone different.=========
This is what you should strive for. SIMPLE, GENUINE analysis of how your own personal emotions become ideas. Because, that's the only thing worth writing about.
Gabriela's response is simple but powerful, in that she clearly expresses how the cartoons made her feel without straying from her main point(s). This allows her to create a strong, directed, and cohesive response that fully addresses the question and its respective components. I definitely feel that I was able to catch a glimpse into her personal moral universe through her response, and I would like to construct my responses in this manner going forward.
ReplyDeleteI also believe Gabriela clearly stated her initial position on the assignment very clearly. She made real connections to her own personal eperience with her great grand parents, as well as a connection beween another group of people who face harsh racist comments. I too, like Brandon will strive to respond to assignments with a deeper connection that translats into powerful stances/concepts.
ReplyDeleteGabriela's response was in fact very clear. She was able to depict her initicial reaction to the cartoons strongly, and beyond that she was able to separate her feelings, with rational. She delivered her answers clearly while sharing to point of views very well.
ReplyDeleteGabriela's response was very clear and understandable. It was easy to relate to because many people at some point in their life my have experienced racism. She also used example from real life and compared it to what was shown in the cartoons.
ReplyDeleteGabriela can clearly relate to the cartoons as the people in her life experienced similar racism. She sends a powerful message about America still being discriminatory today.
ReplyDeleteIn the first sentence the reader knows exactly where Gabriella stands in the moral spectrum. In the first three sentences Gabriella describes three different emotions she is feeling: shocked, disgusted, and offended. I feel that many people might try to act like "know-it-alls," but I appreciate how she indicates what she doesn't know.
ReplyDeleteAny good salesperson or politician will tell you that the best way to get their point across is to personalize it by telling a story. Gabriella refutes the stereotype in a magnificent way by using a great story about her great-grandfather who is a hero.
In summary, her ideas were not only very clear, but they were expressed in away that connected to the reader.
I believe that Gabriela did an excellent job articulating her thoughts and emotions. The way she describes her reaction to the cartoons and how it affected her personally was clear and precise. Her response is structured in a way that allows us to understand where she is coming from and we can relate to her.
ReplyDeleteI think that Gabriela did an exceptional job in expressing her thoughts and opinions. Her statements and thoughts were very concise and to the point. I also agree with her statement of "I had no idea Italians were seen as such pests". She then goes on to express how the videos have effected her own life by speaking about how her grandparents must have had to deal with these issues. Her assignment is straight forward and simply informs the reader as to how she felt while watching the videos.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that her response was simple and genuine. I feel this response was effortless and was simply the actual reactions and thoughts while watching the video. Very detailed on the important ideas of the lesson and she added a personal story which was great.
ReplyDeleteGabriela's response is very clear and original. It came from a place of genuine emotion and care, and helps us understand her thought process as she reacted to the content.
ReplyDeleteGabriela did a great job expressing her idea and stance in the first sentence.
ReplyDeleteGabriela did an amazing job at connecting to the reading and allowing it to seek her own emotional thoughts. She describes her reactions to the specific topics. She was able to relate and allow the reading to touch her heart.
ReplyDeleteGabriela was very genuine in her response and took the cartoons very personally. It is most interesting that even she as the descendent of Italian immigrants was surprised and shocked (as I am sure we all were) to see the depiction of Italian Americans in this country. She came back with a courageous example of how those stereotypes are so not true and cited the history of America's racist past to come to terms with the depiction of Italian Americans.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think Gabriela, expressed her ideas very clearly. I read her assignment very quickly which for me shows that is was very smooth, to the point, understandable and simple. Her answer her personal feelings toward cartoons and she showed very strong example of Italians that were not like cartoons describe them. She also did very good job in analyzing today’s time with past time and stated that America was same way toward immigrants from the very beginning. I look forward to do my best to have my answers as powerful as she did.
