Agree / disagree?

Who is the most annoying, least enjoyable character IN THE NOVEL?

And IN THE FILM?

COMMENTS and REPLIES with furious disagreements, please.

  1. I didn't particularly like Connie. What I found most annoying about her, is that she stayed in an obviously abusive relationship, when if that were me--and I had Vito Corleone as a father, I would have Carlo killed. Being a Corleone, she has the privilege of having that done.
I say 'privilege' not meaning that I condone murder, but if someone was abusing me as badly as Carlo was abusing her, I think I would want them dead.

In the movie, I think Kay was really annoying. The fact that I'm not a fan of Diane Keaton aside....I thought her character was super annoying and naive. When she asked Michael "Is it true?" about him having Carlo killed, and him flipping out saying "Don't ask me about my business affairs." Then two seconds later, saying "No, it's not true." and her believing him? Is she serious?

    1. I think Kay was really just in love, and was ready to believe anything he said to avoid acknowledging that he was a criminal.

    2. I see where you are coming from when you say Connie had the privileged to have Carlo killed, but unless you have been in that situation, its nearly impossible to know if you would truly want your husband murdered.

  2. The most annoying to me was Carlo, who beat up his pregnant wife and then bragged about it. I really believe that the Corleone's gave him too much leniency, and to top it all off, he later betrays Sonny. His death was well deserved, but should have happened sooner.

  3. The most annoying, least enjoyable character in both the novel and the movie for me was Carlos. The first scene I saw him in in the movie I instantly disliked him- I guess because I knew what he would end up doing to Connie. I never like to say that I enjoy when a character I dislike dies, but I was happy to see Carlos get murdered. It was a well deserved death- if death is ever well deserved.

  4. The most annoying character to me in the novel was Carlo. He was abusive, disrespectful, and an overall bad person. Even after Sonny threatened him, he still continued to disregard this threat and be abusive. Not only was this disrespectful to Connie and her family for obvious reasons, but i also feel like by doing what he did he was undermining and testing the power of the Corleone family.
In the movie I really disliked Kay. I found her annoying very intrusive in her husband's affairs. She did not understand the lifestyle Michael's family was from since she was not "one of them" and i feel like she constantly judged Michael and his family for this.

  5. The most annoying and least enjoyable character in my eyes had to be Fredo. I was always annoyed by Fredo and his incompetence. At first I never hated him, but once he betrayed Michael I couldn’t stand him. He offered nothing to the family and was essentially a waste.

  6. I have to agree with Andrey that Carlo was definitely the most annoying character in the book. Carlo was abusive towards Connie and bragged about it to other men. Reading the scenes where he beat his wife was just disgusting and it really made me HATE him, I kind of hoped Sonny would beat him badly again if I'm being completely honest.

In the film I kind of felt that Connie was the most annoying. First of all her voice was annoying, she seemed needy and very whiny, and the scene where she threw the dishes everywhere was super dramatic when it didn’t need to be.

  7. The least enjoyable character in the novel for me, as much of my classmates have already pointed out, was Carlo. He came off as a shallow, ungrateful, and disrespectful shell of a character that always demanded more than he was entitled to. He was never satisfied with the wealth and love he did have, and instead abused Connie and his position while expecting to receive more power from the Don. He deserved the punishment he received, and I think he serves as a foil of everything the Corleone family love is not.

As for the film adaptation, I must agree as well that Kay was a largely unlikable character. Where in the boo k she is influential and motivational in her relationship with Michael, she is the exact opposite in the movie; her lines seem pointless, and her actions seem there just to buy screen time.

    1. I would have to slightly disagree. Kat is a classic representation of a WASP. She and Micheal had plans of getting married and Micheal being away from the family business.

In the film the ending scene with Kay is one of the most powerful scenes. She plainly asks Michael if he did in fact kill Carlo. He builds her trust and allows her to ask him one question about his business affairs, (lies) and she hugs him. Then she leaves the room and sees the men kiss Micheal's hand and close the door. This symbolizes that Micheal has become exactly what he said in the beginning he didn't want to be: His father. She may not have a verbal significance like in the book, but her physical presence is the importance. Without her in this last scene, we would not fully grasp the idea that all hope is gone for Micheal to be anything other than the next Don.

  8. In the novel Carlo was very annoying character. His negative focus on life made me angry. His life with Connie and how he was always hunting for wealth made me dislike him. He wanted everything good and only good from Connie’s family. He wanted all the attention on him. Man should not be like that, it seemed like he spends his life with drinking, having other women and beating his wife.
In the movie Carlo also was a bad character but I found that actor that was playing Clemenza’s role was not right one. I was imagining someone strong physically and smarter. When I saw Clemeza and his big belly a did not liked him. Scene where he was cooking food and acting as a chief was more for him.

  9. I believe the most annoying, least enjoyable character in the novel was Johnny Fontane. I do not see the significance of have more than a page of writing tailor to his life in Hollywood. I understand he is the godson to the Don, but after he was given the role in the film what more was he needed for?

In the film, the most annoying character would be Connie. Ever since her wedding when she ran up to Johnny and made a great big scene on top of all the already adoring fans, I knew she would be a dramatic person. I also believed this when she was having a tantrum in her home going around breaking all the plates and cups, and ruining the food. She knew the more damage she did, the angrier Carlo would be. I felt she was too dramatic and annoying. (I would even go as far as saying she was aiding in the set up of Sonny being killed. If she wasn't throwing a fit then Carlo wouldn't have a reason to escalate the situation and beat her with a belt.

  10. Carlo has got to be the worst character in the movie. You just love to hate him. I wouldn't say that he was annoying, he was just despicable. I also agree wholeheartedly that Connie was the annoying one. She was portrayed as a spoiled person who only cared about herself and her dramatic circumstances. I could have definitely done without Connie's added flair.

  11. The least enjoyable character in the book was Carlo. He had no respect for his wife or the Corleone family. He beat his wife Connie and bragged about it everywhere he went. He was happy that he could control one member of the Corleone family. I loved it when Sonny kicked his butt and taught a lesson. I also hate him because he helped in setting up Sonny to be killed. I am glad he is killed at the end of the novel.

The least enjoyable character in the film was Connie. Even though I loved her in the novel, I couldn't stand her in the film. She was somewhat annoying. She should have left Carlo from day one and known he was going to be a horrible husband. He stole her money and cheated on her. She could have done much more to him since she is a member of the Corleone family.
