AND THEN TO TOP IT ALL OFF

What is the best book of the three we read? (Don't be embarrassed if you say Godfather, although you should be.)

And what about the best film?

COMMENTS and REPLIES with more furious disagreements.

  1. Of the books, I like Christ in Concrete the most. Even though it was the most difficult and frustrating to read, I think it it does a really good job of making us think, especially when it forces us to imagine all the gruesome deaths that occur.

As for the films, I must say that I find The Godfather to be the best. It is very well put together and does an excellent job at portraying Vito as a thoughtful man who exercises his power in a manner he feels just. (Not to mention the score of the film, which is also excellent and matches the feel one gets when they think of the "family.")

  2. My favorite book that we read had to be "Son Of Italy". This book did a wonderful job introducing to me what life was really like for Italian Immigrants and how hard it was. I got a lot out of this book, something that really stuck with me is that anyone can accomplish what they put their heart to if they never give up. I will always remember this book.

To pick my favorite film is hard, it is between "L'emigrante" or "The Italian". I will go with "L'emigrante". It was extremely enjoyable to watch and a good comedic relief. It did not feel like I was watching a movie for class, I would watch this movie again if I ever came across it.

  3. I think the best book we read was "Christ in Concrete." I loved the different style of writing and the overall plot of the story. I thought it was interesting and definitely memorable.

Of all the movies we watched, my favorite is The Godfather. My family loved this movie but I had never watched it until this past week. I think Coppola did a great job at portraying the life of a Sicilian Don and his family. I also agree with Andrey and will say that the score of the film is one of my favorites.

  4. Out of all the books we read, The Godfather was the best book by far. I actually believe that The Godfather was the best book I have ever read in my life. The details and descriptions of each scene within the novel was second to none. I loved every page of the book and would highly recommend it to anybody that enjoys reading. As for the films, I think that The Godfather was obviously the best. Just like the book, The Godfather is also my favorite film of all time.

  5. My favorite book was Christ in Concrete due to its unique writing style. Christ in Concrete was so moving due to the way it depicted life after death for the loved ones. The details in the book were amazing and unlike anything I had ever experienced. My favorite film had to be L'emigrante, I loved the comedic side of it and how light hearted it felt for such a tough time. I even watched the film with my sister and she enjoyed it as well.

  6. My favorite book from a literary perspective was that of Christ in Concrete. I enjoyed the subconscious, dreamlike style of writing that permeated its pages, demanding that I focus all of my attention into each and every page I read. However, from an entertainment perspective, The Godfather would have to be my favorite of the semester, as I was completely engrossed in the fast moving plot of Puzo's work.

As for films, my favorite would have to be L'Emigrante. It had the perfect combination of seriousness and wit, giving an interpretation of the struggles of Italian immigrants from a humorous perspective.

  7. I really enjoyed reading Son of Italy. It was a book that I connected to on a personal level and it made me think about my own experiences as an immigrant to the United States. Christ in Concrete was a close second because it was not only a great text but a work of art. I felt like I was in the minds of these characters and I felt their pain and struggle more deeply than I can recall in other works.

In terms of movies, my favorite movie was Give Us This Day. I loved being able to see what happened before the events in Christ in Concrete and I felt it was a very engrossing movie.

  8. The best book for me was “Son of Italy”, maybe because this is first book that I read about Italian Immigrants and it stuck in my memory. I liked this book because author made it very easy to read but also I contained a lot of information about Italians, their culture, living style and food. For me as someone from another culture it was interesting to read and learn new culture. This book also teaches me not to give up in hard situation, as main character I learn to fight and accomplish my dreams at any cost and believe that America is a land of where dreams become true.
In terms of films I liked Godfather. The reason for that when I was reading the book I was so interested in it that I wanted to see all the character in real life and compare them to the book.

  9. At first I would automatically say the Godfather, because the movie is such a classic and i never got to read the book which I truly enjoyed. But I loved reading Christ in Concrete so much more than I expected. It was a great book, and the challenging read, made me enjoy it even more. The descriptive language emphasizing the imagery was so powerful and vivid. It was was a great new perspective from Son of Italy into the hardships of being an Italian in America.

Here I would say the best film was The Godfather. I appreciated reading the book first then watching the film. It helped me see similarities and differences between the characters. I also appreciated the facial expressions which really give off more information than the spoken dialogues.

  10. My most favorite was Christ In Concrete. Aside from being the most challenging text, It was a text that just draws the reader in because you want to know what happens next. I like it because it was not easy, and one tents to dislike things that aren't easy, but this book was one of the few things that I found challenging, but loved it once I reread, and kept reading, and finally finished the book.

  12. My most favorite book of all three was Son of Italy. It was not too difficult to read and I could not put it down once I started reading. Even though it was somewhat of an autobiography, it was very interesting to read about the struggle of this Italian immigrant and how he eventually was successful. MY favorite film was L'Emigrante. It was hilarious and I loved watching it. Through comedy, the real struggle of Immigrants was depicted but in a humorous way which was amusing.
